Caves of Anjoibe

Anjoibe2

Some 82 km out from Mahajanga, you will come to one of the most fascinating caves in Madagascar. There are huge chambers, some in daylight, some in total dark, and up to some 20 meters high, with a huge number of well preserved stalactite and stalagmite. The caves are som 5 km in length, and only discovered partly. Some of the chambers hold a huge number of bats, others are holding areas of water.

There are many traces of human occupation of the caves in ancient times. Here and there, old pottery points to a distant past when the caves were used for shelter and protection. Some fossilized bones of an extinct hippopotamus can also be seen in the interior of the cave.

After seing the caves, the afternoon could well be used to visit the nearby small river with a fascinating waterfall, and the company of some lemurs, who are living in the area.
